MAYORS BUILD UP AN APPETITE TO RAISE AWARENESS OF SENIOR HUNGER

Covington, KY (March 10, 2008) – On Wednesday, March 19, 2008, Senior Services of Northern Kentucky will team up with local area mayors to bring attention to a problem that often goes unacknowledged: senior hunger.  Mayors for Meals Day is an annual event that SSNK coordinates as a part of their March for Meals campaign. The following is a list of this year’s participants:

·   Mayor Daniel McGinley – Alexandria, KY

·   Mayor Bob Miller – Ryland Heights, KY

·   Mayor Mary Brown – Ft. Thomas, KY

·   Mayor Butch Callery – Covington, KY

 ·   Judge Executive Steve Pendery – Campbell County, KY

Senior Services of Northern Kentucky’s “Meals-For-Wheels” program delivers daily nutritious meals in the Northern Kentucky area to seniors who are homebound or unable to prepare meals for themselves.  As a show of support for the elderly members of their community, local area mayors will help deliver these meals as part of Mayors for Meals Day on Wednesday, March 19, 2008.

During the trip, mayors will have an opportunity to meet and converse with some of the local seniors within their community who are in need of meal assistance.  “We are excited about having so many mayors participate in our event this year,” says Annalise Appel, Communications-Volunteer Officer for Senior Services of Northern Kentucky.  “We want to raise awareness of senior hunger in our community.”

March for Meals is a national campaign, in which SSNK is a participant, to raise awareness of senior hunger, and to encourage action on the part of the local community. Senior nutrition programs across the United States promote March for Meals in their local communities through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives. Mayors for Meals Day is a component of March for Meals that utilizes the involvement of local mayors.
