To ensure that older residents in Boone, Kenton, Campbell & Grant
counties can enjoy the companionship of their pets without sacrificing
their nutritional needs Senior Services of Northern Kentucky began the Animeals on Wheels program which provides donated pet food to pet
companions in the Northern Kentucky Community.
We found that our elderly clients
that receive Meals on Wheels were sharing their home-delivered meal with
their cat or dog. We know pets are important because they provide
companionship and protection and give a lonely senior citizen a reason
to get up in the morning. We are now accepting dog and cat chow,
litter, cat pans and bird seed that will be distributed to seniors in
need. Not only will the dog or cat benefit from a healthy diet
formulated for their needs, but the older adult can enjoy their
home-delivered meal, which for many, is the only meal that they have for
the entire day. It is a program designed to help our seniors in need,
but also cares for our four-legged friends as well.
"Many of our clients benefit from
having a pet in their home but struggle to find the funds to purchase
pet food and supplies," said Barbara Gunn, president/CEO of Senior
Services. "Without assistance, our low-income elderly pet owners are
carving portions from their meals to share with their pets."
Each month our volunteers will deliver
pet supplies to Meals on Wheels recipients at no cost to them. In doing
so this not only provides personal contact for our seniors but also
maintains that the seniors nutritional needs are not being sacrificed
for their beloved pet..
